5000 subscribers? Not in my lifetime.
I thought artist statements are always like “I am a painter…” format?
I think most artists, at some level, are trying to be funny.
Thank you for your weekly content. It's an essential part of my art practice!
If an artist is talented and 60 years old, can he succeed?
"my art is a unique way of expression and uses color and paint to explore new feelings and emotions" hahaha
You know I enjoy your channel, as I also really enjoy the James Kalm/Loren Musk Rough Cuts. Both give me insight into artist I might not know...but...this idea that we need to make lists of this and that category just denies the whole nature and joy of art. You can rattle off all this gallerist jargon about what this painter was thinking or that painters POV, but it's all aesthetic and subjectivity in the end. If the work communicates something to the viewer now that's good, if it continues to inform us years to come, that might be even better. Making lists seems a silly proposition and only serves to alienate some folks.
It's all about marketing
You forgot Lest Stoner
Great video, and very informative. However I think a lot of these mentalities of not being commercial and separating artistic integrity from sales keeps many artists permanently poor and keeps the ‘noble starving artist’ trope alive
DEI at it's worst. Had to stop the video after the first 3 minutes
With Instagram going the way of becoming a data gathering platform for Meta AI, should we as artists be truly participating on the platform or should we focusing on finding alternatives?
Alternatives
I have been at this art game for about 9 years and i've been scaling this ladder quickly, my biggest achievement was getting good gallery representation with the Paul Petro gallery in Toronto. Patience , it can take a few years , meeting the right people and shaking hands. Going viral helped a bit but really all the group exhibitions i tried my best to steal the show and luckily i was well received. I have followed your channel for a few years and its helped reaffirm the decisions i've made and miigwetch
I do understand Your intent as regards more artist than galleries. In close observation it is not so because The term artist is wide and encompasses various specializations , for example if You visit a typical art show how many painters, compaired to sculptors , interior decorator s , audiovisual artist, graphic artist actually participate, I bet You know that there lot more real painters and wannabe painter's than the rest who rely largely on commissioned work s.
I love the rough edges and stains
If you are a graduate of an art school: please ask your professors and your fellow students for a first contact with a gallery, it will work out. If you did not study at an art academy: just forget it... Assuming you are over 40 and you did not study at an academy, then the probability that you will ever get a contract from a (good) gallery is, I would say, less than 1%. Otherwise you would have to make very, very, very interesting art.
Not fun.. Pretentious.. Clumsy.. Disappointing...to big as well.
I am the grestest living artist in the world.
Probably need a PR client to do all this
Very expensive! You can just do it yourself, it is not that difficult. We provide free guides on almost everything with our platform so you can do it yourself. Wishing you all the best!
I get zero traction on Instagram but good response on Facebook. All I get from Instagram is NFT spam and fraud.
Yes, there is a lot of it on Instagram indeed. When it comes to growing an online audience on Instagram, too often, the focus is too much on what works for the algorithm, what hashtags to use, or how many times you should post. Instead, it is a lot more efficient and effective for real-life success if you spend more time networking on Instagram. Engage with others instead of posting about yourself and you'll get there! Even more, by doing so, you can "choose" your followers by engaging with them in your initiative.
When I look at Warhol's career, it seems to me that he followed all ten of these commandments. And we see how successful he was. If that doesn't validate the efficacy of this list, then I don't know what does.
But how do you authenticate the certificate? With another certificate?
Great points in the video and very well said
You could always just walk into the gallery's restroom and draw something on the wall. That way, technically, you can say the gallery has some of your art on it's walls.
😂👏
It’s tricky to build your social media audience without doing the things the algorithm rewards you for. (Like doing the weird canvas turn around/reveal.)
No it’s not, just do good work and be intelligent on how you use the platform

Social media gets us in our instant gratification phase, but always think of the long game too... I once had a curator inquire about a post with my work from years ago when in art school. I told him I no longer create and am more "behind-the-scenes" in the industry yet he told me to reconsider... and when I do to get back to him. Everything you post may come back to reward you, algorithm or not.
i dont think the names we give our art movements are accurate or have any meaning. Its only when the movement has long since ended that an accurate name can be given to it. TBH im not sure any of these movement names are all that fitting. eg, Bonnard. He worked through art periods, so what does that make him? I find the name 'post impressionism' a silly title because i is a non-name. That being said, i totally agree with your contemporary criteria.
i love your channel.
I wouldn't pay a fee for someone to consider showing my artwork, that a money making scam. ❤
It depends; most often, the entities who use this strategy as their primary business model are indeed scams-think of vanity art galleries or online art magazines that specifically focus on giving paid exposure to artists, as their audience consists of only other artists. However, magazines that are primarily making money through partnerships and sales do have an audience that can be beneficial for artists and can be worth it.
Or open your own gallery....
I’ve wondered the feasibility of doing this myself. Opening a small gallery with a collective of artists. Even if it’s a more commercial route, I wonder the statistics and if it is a viable alternative.
Definitely a possibility!
business rates and rent for a physical gallery! Need to sell a lot to cover costs.
It's all about the galleries' collectors and contacts after all... We've seen busy Intersection storefront galleries fail and 2nd floor apartment galleries flourish. It's always who you know... 😉
Is there anyone on here that's a Artist Manager in NYC?
Is there any proof that gallery directors actually read online art magazines? I think 90% of them are paid vanity projects
Today, the majority are indeed paid vanity projects-but not high-end art magazines with high standards in terms of the artists they feature/accept. When it comes to proof for this strategy to work, I have seen it a couple of times with our platform. So, indeed, be aware of vanity projects that are only after your money, but do not ignore this strategy in general. Thank you for tuning in!
That discourse makes an art gallery sound like a holy grail, not simply a mediator business model that earns commission from the inflated prices that they set for someone else’s work. Yes, they are useful (at least some of them), but let’s not make them sound gods - alike. Especially nowadays, when the business in every sphere drifts more and more towards online.
But still isn't the best way to sell art is thru a gallery where people can see work live?
I think it just comes down to professionalism which is as important in the art world as in any other profession. Gallerists search for artists rather than looking through email submissions because often the submissions are not what they are looking for. The curator from my local gallery is more active on instagram than anyone else I know. Sometimes I wonder where he finds the time lol. But he knows what he is looking for so it’s more efficient from the gallery’s perspective I believe.
The guy is an art gallerist. When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail...
online art sales statistics make up a very small percentage of the total sales annually, especially after covid
Of course they are not gods, but if you want to make it in the art world, they are the most important business partner for most artists-with the exception of artists who go for the more institutional route via curators, projects, open calls, and museum shows. There are other business models for artists without gallery representation, but these are outside or on the periphery of the art world. Concerning online sales, this is what the UBS art market report states: "Online sales accounted for 16% of the total value of the art market’s 2022 turnover, down from the peak of 25% in 2020, and 4% lower than the share of global retail e-commerce (20%) in 2022." Online sales have a significant presence, but they remain a small portion of the total market share and 85% of all online sales are below $5,000. Personally, I also prefer to exhibit the works in real life and to connect with your collectors and art enthusiasts in general.
Tnanks you very much for your advices !
The pleasure is all mine!
Loving your co-host! Great episode. I'm a 30 sculptor, watching with interest, and a dachshund.
Big thanks! Greetings from us both to you both 🐶👋🙌
God this is such a circle jerk of con artists engaging in mental masturbation.
Check your fur baby for fleas
the only thing you need is to be rich, in a privileged position, and make whatever the money can make, your paintings or objects can be made in a poor country for poor artists and you are ready to go into the art world!
Is there a document stating what percentage of each ethnicity should form the group?
The barrier to entry is low, and there is some misplaced belief that 'doing what you love' can make an artist a lot of money. Ford Maddox Brown kept a diary of the hours he spent on each painting. I went through all his entries and did the math: most of his well known works took a minimum of 900 + hours each of effort at the canvas. Many took 1500 hours or more. He logged only the hours at the canvas, not the extra stuff. a 900 hour canvas at 8 hours a day is 3.5 months. let that sink in.
Everybody think they can make art. But its junk or decorative mostly. Not everybody can produce some sacred, something that have shamanic power. That ads something new to the language that art is. And then it remains reproduction. And that is boring. Only a few galleries worldwide really are running the bussines. The rest? Forget it. And there you may find something but it could be expensive deko. We do not really have that social structure like for example in former times where artist could spent their time doing nothing else as art and some of them made a living. And that was before the crazy evolution towards billions of pictures everywhere available.
So no new Picasso in sight,or? Besides that -Rankings are for sport ,but not for art.
not a single white man on the list, im sure that was just a coincidence after acting like it was a bad thing that all the greatest painters of all time are white men.
nailed it.
This was amazing info and so insightful. It goes against so much junk floating around the internet and its so nice to hear something that resonates.
if the numbers are true, then the income differences don't represent artists moving from hobbyist to established because if that was the case you would see more even splits between the bars in the graph. I suspect what this really shows is that the majority of artists never move up the income levels, but perhaps 5-10% will, ie the ones that are in the 'established category' are the ones moving, the rest either stay in their category or fall off by attrition. I know of many 'established' artists who can't afford jack squat.
This "advice" has nothing to do with art and is solely focused on the elite gallery business. The modern art scene has become a laughingstock because of this outlook. You are trapped in the same cycle of bad influence that you criticize. However, because of the comforting effect of the money involved, no genuine reflection or change is likely to happen anytime soon.
All very ugly art .a reflection of society...ugliness and emptiness...
Why have you all made this so damn difficult?? This is way too much to function as an artist today!!!
Francis Bacon talks about his experience in the Rothko Room at the Tate Gallery. He said "they were the most dreary paintings that had ever been made".
